4.4 million inhabitants at turn of year

Around 4,446,000 persons are expected to be living in Norway on 1 January, according to preliminary estimates. The population has thus increased by 28,000 in 1998, or 3,500 more than the year before.

1998's growth is the result of a net natural increase of 14,300 (58,700 births minus 44,400 deaths) and a net migration gain of 14,000 based on immigration and emigration figures totalling 37,000 and 23,000 respectively. Compared to 1997, the biggest change is in the number of immigrants, which increased by 5,000. Births show a weaker trend, while emigration has increased some. Deaths are at about the same level as in 1997. The calculations are only done for the entire country, with no breakdowns for counties and municipalities.
