The net migration was 9 400, which is 3 500 less than in the corresponding quarter last year. The decrease was due to about 600 fewer immigrations and 2 900 more emigrations than the corresponding quarter last year. This was the lowest net migration in a 3rd quarter since 2006. The birth surplus was 6 600, which was almost 760 more than in the 3rd quarter last year.
Asylum seekers without a residence permit in Norway are not registered as resident in the Central Population Register and are therefore not registered as immigrated. Applications from this autumn’s high influx need to be processed by The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) before they are included in the population statistics.

Highest immigration by Polish, Swedish and Syrian citizens
Once again, the Poles made up the largest group of foreign citizens who immigrated, and constituted almost as many as the next two groups combined, i.e. the Swedes and the Syrians. The fourth largest group was made up of Lithuanians.
Highest emigration by Swedish and Polish citizens
The emigration of foreign citizens was slightly higher in this quarter than earlier years. Swedish and Polish citizens made up the largest groups of foreign citizens who emigrated, with 1 200 Swedish citizens and 800 Polish. As in the 2nd quarter both this year and last year, more Swedish citizens emigrated than immigrated. Among the other large groups of immigrants to Norway – Polish, Lithuanian and Syrian citizens – immigration is still higher than emigration.
Higher excess of births
The excess of births was 6 600 in the 3rd quarter, which is the highest in any corresponding quarter since 2009. A total of 16 000 children were born in the 3rd quarter and 9 400 persons died
Small increase in population registered in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters combined
The population increased by 39 600 in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters this year, which is 7 800 less than for the corresponding quarters last year.
A total of 45 800 babies have been born so far this year, which is about 100 more than in the same period last year. The number is still lower than in the top years 2008-2010, when nearly 47 400 babies were born in the three first quarters. This year, the number of deaths is 30 500 to date, which is 640 more than last year.
Clearing-up in the Central Population RegisterOpen and readClose
Persons who stay in the country for less than six months are not registered and are not included in the figures. The Tax Administration undertakes an ongoing clear-up of the Central Population Register of out-migrated persons who no longer live in Norway. In recent years, clearing-up the Central Population Register has been standard practice.
Asylum seekersOpen and readClose
Only persons who have moved during the last 6 months are included in the statistics. Asylum seekers are not included, but these figures can be found on the UDI’s website.
The statistics is published with Population.
