Decline in fertility
A total of 58 900 children were born in 2016, almost the same as 2015. This gives a total fertility rate (TRF) for women of 1.71, a decline compared with 2015. In 2009, the total fertility rate was 1.98. Since then, the fertility rate has declined.

Further increase in male life expectancy
From 2015 to 2016, the life expectancy at birth for men increased by 0.25 years, while the increase for women was just 0.02 years. Men can expect to live 80.6 years on average and women 84.2 years. The gender gap is now 3.6 years.
