9 out of 10 inheritance tax cases processed within six months

The Tax Administration processed 90 per cent of inheritance and gift cases in 2010 within six months. Total inheritance tax on inheritance and gifts amounted to NOK 2.2 billion and 44 594 cases were handled.

By comparison, a total of 48 551 inheritance and gift cases were handled in 2009 and inheritance tax was set at NOK 2.7 billion, while 71 per cent of the cases were processed within six months.

Increased number of reports

The Tax Administration reported 1 007 cases in 2010. This was almost three times as many as the year before, when there were 380 reports. Tax evasion or assisting tax evasion may lead to a report, as well as non-delivery of mandatory forms and tasks, such as tax returns and VAT statements.

Additional use of electronic services

A number of online services are offered and users are able to supply many forms and notices electronically. Over half of all persons applying for a new tax withholding card in 2010 submitted the application electronically, while the share of those who reported inland migration electronically was 64 per cent.

Furthermore, 6 out of 10 wage earners and pensioners accepted the pre-completed tax return without making changes, and thus did not need to submit their tax returns to the Tax Administration. Of those who chose to submit their tax return, 58 per cent of wage earners and pensioners chose to submit electronically. It is also possible for taxpayers to receive their tax return in electronic form and not on paper, and 274 921 taxpayers chose this solution.

More telephone calls answered

Notwithstanding, many enquiries came by telephone in 2010. There were 2.7 million calls to the Tax Administration advisory service by telephone, Tax Hotline, of which 83 per cent were answered. Compared with the previous year, there was a slight increase in the percentage of answered calls, while the number of calls remained at the same level.

There was a major shift to a new computer system for tax processing by the Tax Administration in the statistical year 2010, which may affect comparability with previous years for some indicators.
