Increased kindergarten fees

The fees in the public kindergartens rose by 1.2 per cent from August 2002 to January 2003. However, during the last year the fees have declined by 1.3 per cent.

From August 2002 to January 2003 the public kindergarten fees increased by 1.2 per cent. In contrast, the fees declined by 2.4 per cent from January 2002 to August 2002 due to increased kindergarten subsidy. This resulted in a reduction in the public kindergarten fees of 1.3 per cent during the last year.

August 2002 to January 2003

The fees in the public kindergartens rose by 1.2 per cent from August 2002 to January 2003. The largest increase in the public kindergarten fees occurred in the region of Oslo and Akershus, with a rise of 2.4 per cent. The fees in the public kindergartens in South-Eastern Norway declined marginally and was thus the only region registered with decreased kindergarten fees during the period August 2002 to January 2003.

From August 2002 to January 2003 the fees in the private kindergartens increased by 1.3 per cent. In contrast to the fees in the public kindergartens, the private kindergarten fees rose in all the regions.

Year-to-year change: Large regional differences

The fees in the public kindergartens declined by 1.3 per cent from January 2002 to January 2003. The fees in the region of Oslo and Akershus fell by 4.0 per cent during the last 12 months, which was the largest reduction in the public kindergarten fees. In Hedmark and Oppland the fees in the public kindergartens rose by 3.2 per cent. Agder and Rogaland together with Hedmark and Oppland were the only regions registered with increased fees on a year-to-year basis.

The fees in the private kindergartens increased by 1.7 per cent from January 2002 to January 2003. Similar to the public kindergartens, the fees in the private kindergartens were characterized by relatively large regional differences.
