Kindergarten fees remain stable

Norwegian kindergarten fees rose by 0.2 per cent from August 2009 to January 2010. It was the public kindergarten fees that contributed to the increase.

Household payments in public kindergartens showed a slight increase of 0.4 per cent from August 2009 to January 2010, while fees in private kindergartens fell by 0.1 per cent. 54 per cent of all kindergarten children attend public kindergartens.

The regions North Norway, together with Hedmark and Oppland had the largest rise in public kindergarten fees, with 1.3 and 0.8 per cent respectively, while no change in prices was registered for South Eastern Norway. In total, the household payment for public kindergartens rose by 0.8 per cent from January 2009 to January 2010. Most municipalities have now adjusted their kindergarten fee to the maximum of NOK 2 330 per month, thus the changes are mainly caused by new rates for additional food payments.

The maximum fee for a full-time place in a kindergarten is NOK 2 330 per month. The ceiling remains unchanged for 2010.
