Recorded crime, 4th quarter 1996:

Violent crime continues upward

Nearly 400 violent crimes, including 300 rapes, attempted rapes or sexual assaults on children, were reported in the final quarter of 1996 in Norway. This is 25 per cent more violent crimes compared to the same quarter in 1995, and means that the relatively strong increase seen in third quarter 1996 has continued.
As in the third quarter, the fourth quarter saw a strong increase in violent crime (offences against the person, sexual offences and robbery). Reported crimes included 12 murders, 22 cases of attempted murder and grievous bodily harm (GBH), 136 rapes and attempted rapes, 140 cases of unlawful intercourse with children under the age of 14 and 39 incest cases, and 55 aggravated robberies. Altogether, 25 per cent more violent crimes were recorded in the fourth quarter compared to the same quarter last year.

Pornography offences still numerous

As in the two previous quarters, the large increase in sexual crime was primarily connected to pornography-related offences. Although there was a large increase in both unlawful intercourse with children under the age of 14 and incest, pornography offences increased sevenfold. It has been indicated in the media that the high figures in early 1996 could be attributed to numerous reports against the same distributor. This could be the case in the fourth quarter, too, but is not shown in the statistics.
