The EU countries were the recipients or shippers of over 98 per cent of all goods hauled abroad on Norwegian-registered lorries in the first three quarters of 1996. Sweden was far and away the largest recipient/shipping country. General cargo and processed goods and the like were the dominant type of merchandise.
Altogether, nearly 2.8 million tons of goods were transported abroad on Norwegian lorries in the first three quarters of last year. Of the total, nearly 1.5 million tons were transported from Norway, and 1.3 million tons to Norway, according to Statistics Norway's new survey on international transports with Norwegian-registered lorries.
Most to and from Sweden
Sweden took in nearly 0.8 million tons of goods. This accounted for nearly 59 per cent of the total quantity of exported merchandise hauled by Norwegian vehicles. The comparative share from Sweden to Norway was 67 per cent, or nearly 0.9 million tons. Germany and Denmark were the second and third most important recipient/shipping countries, measured in the quantity transported. The percentages were respectively 11.8 and 7.9 per cent of the total quantity of goods.
