Population Statistics. Families, 1 January 1997:

14 per cent of couples with children are cohabitants

There were 2,052,000 family units in Norway at the beginning of the year. Altogether 842,300 married couples with or without children at home made up 41 per cent of the families. The 81,900 cohabiting couples with joint children living at home made up nearly 14 per cent of all couples with children.
In the statistics, a single person is regarded as a family. For the country as a whole fully 49 per cent of the families consisted of single persons. Oslo had the largest percentage of one-person families, with single persons making up nearly 65 per cent of the families. Family statistics do not give figures for cohabiting couples without children or with children from previous marriages or relationships because there is no ongoing registration of cohabitants. Consequently, the statistics for single persons and for single mothers (and to an extent single fathers) with children is higher than in reality.
