Conciliation boards handled 109,000 disputes last year, up seven per cent from the previous year, but only one-third the number of the record year of 1988.
Norwegian conciliation boards handled seven per cent more civil disputes compared to the year before, when the increase was six per cent. The sustained decline seen in Norway since 1988, when the caseload reached the highest level ever recorded, has come to an end and the number of cases is again on the rise.
Despite repeated reminders, six conciliation boards failed to deliver reports on their activities, so it must be assumed that they did not hear any cases.
Parties seldom agree
Under four per cent of the disputes dealt with last year ended in agreement between the parties. The settlement percentage was nevertheless the highest since the early 1980s. In the latter half of the 1980s, when the number of cases soared, the percentage of disputes settled dropped to between one and two per cent.
