Non-residential building starts up 8%

During the summer months of June, July and August, construction of non-residential utility floor space increased by eight per cent compared to the same period last year. Oslo topped the building starts statistics, with 163,000 sq. m, followed by Akershus County, with 160,600 sq. m. For Oslo, the increase is almost triple that of the summer of 1996.

In Troms County, which also saw a strong increase in non-housing utility floor space starts in June, July and August this year, the amount of space commenced was more than double that of last year. In both of the Agder counties, however, building starts were down by half this summer compared to last year.

August housing starts totalled 2,053, up 10 per cent from August last year. In the first eight months of the year, the number of housing starts increased by 17 per cent compared to 1996. All counties except for Nord-Trøndelag and Finnmark had about unchanged or increased housing starts during this period.
