Roundwood cut, 1995/96:

Big decline in roundwood cut

A total of 7.8 million cubic metres of timber was cut for sale and industrial production in 1995/96, preliminary figures show. Compared to 1994/95 this is a decline of 16 per cent. The decrease must be viewed in connection with the lower price for timber. The price of all timber dropped an average of NOK 38.

Quantity cut have not been this low since 1977/78. With the exception of Oslo and Sogn og Fjordane the roundwood cut fell in all counties from 1994/95 to 1995/96.

The quantity logged was down 17 per cent for spruce, 14 per cent for pine and five per cent for hardwood. A total of 3.7 million cubic metres of special and saw timber and 3.6 million cubic metres of pulpwood was felled in 1995/96. This works out to a 25 per cent decline for special and saw timber and a decrease of six per cent for pulpwood.
