Fewer people on welfare

Economic assistance payments went down by about NOK 90 million from 1996 to 1997. At the same time the number of social assistance (welfare) recipients dropped by around 7,000.

Roughly NOK 3,980 billion was paid out last year, against NOK 4,073 billion the year before. Social assistance payments also declined from 1995 to 1996. The number of social assistance recipients dropped from NOK 153,800 in 1996 to around NOK 146,700 in 1997. From 1995 to 1996, the rolls declined by 6,600 clients.
