Consistently high wages

Full-time employees in oil and gas production and mining and quarrying had an average total monthly salary of NOK 29,400 at 1 October 1997. Employees in oil and gas production and services associated with these activities had an average total monthly salary of NOK 30,700, while employees in mining and quarrying had an average total monthly salary of NOK 20,900.

Around 13,000, or 86 per cent of the 15,000 full-time employees who are included in the survey are employed in oil and gas production. This industrial subsection is characterized by many employees in positions requiring a higher education, few women and relatively high salaries in all job categories. Managers had an average total monthly salary of NOK 43,700, employees in jobs requiring a college or university education had an average total monthly salary of NOK 30,700 and machine operators had an average total monthly salary of NOK 26,400, to mention several groups.

The mining and quarrying industrial subsection includes the mining or quarrying of coal, metal ore, stone and chemical minerals plus the extraction of sand and gravel. Here the picture is somewhat different with relatively few employees with a higher education, few women here as well, and considerably lower monthly salaries in most job categories. Managers in this subsection have an average total monthly salary of NOK 31,200, positions requiring a higher education pay about NOK 25,000 and machine operators earn NOK 19,400. If we look at the monthly earnings of the office, sales and service jobs, however, the wage differences are somewhat less with NOK 21,300 for activities in oil and gas production and NOK 19,100 for activities in mining and quarrying.
