57 000 man-years as overtime
20 per cent of full-time employees worked overtime in the second quarter 2003, 23 per cent males and 15 per cent females. The amount of overtime equaled about 57 000 man-years, or 4.3 per cent of all man-years by employees working full-time.
The proportion of people working over-time was highest in oil and gas extraction, 31 per cent, financial intermediation and wholesale trade, 28 per cent, and lowest in education, retail trade, health and social work. 12-14 per cent.
Overtime is defined as working hours which exceed the settled or contractual working hours for full-time employees, conducted during a specified survey week. 58 per cent of the overtime were compensated by payment, 21 per cent by time off, while 21 per cent were reported to be done without any kind of compensation.
The use of overtime increases by educational level. Among full-time employees with a university or college education, 24 per cent worked overtime, against 17 per cent of employees with less education.
