Almost half of all disabled in employment

While the employment rate fell from 77.4 per cent to 74.4 per cent in the population as a whole from the fourth quarter of 2000 to the fourth quarter of 2004, it fell from 47.0 per cent to 43.9 per cent for disabled people, i.e. a decrease of 3 percentage points within both groups.

Since the fall in the employment rate was the same for both groups, the difference in the level of employment consequently was the same in the fourth quarter of 2000 and the fourth quarter of 2004, at 30 percentage points. These are the main results from an ad hoc module to the Labour Force Survey carried out by Statistics Norway.

The employment rate among disabled men and women was 45.5 and 42.5 per cent respectively in the fourth quarter of 2004. The corresponding rates in the population as a whole was 77.3 and 71.3 per cent. In other words, the gender difference is smaller among disabled people than in the rest of the population, 3 against 6 percentage points.

15 per cent aged 16-66 are disabled

15 per cent of the population aged 16-66 reported to have a disability, defined as long-term health problems, which may limit their everyday life. This result is almost on level with the fourth quarter of 2000. In the fourth quarter of 2004 the disability rate was 17 per cent among women and 14 per cent among men.

Smallest difference among the youngest

The difference in the employment rate between the population as a whole and the disabled was only 5 percentage points among those aged 16-24 years. In the older groups the employment rate for the population as a whole was about 30 percentage points higher than for the disabled. Among those aged 60-66 years, however, the difference was 20 percentage points.

Among men and women in total the difference between the disabled and the population as a whole was very similar, at 32 and 29 percentage points respectively.

The data are based on an ad hoc module of questions added to the Labour Force Survey in the fourth quarter of 2004.
