Fewer vacancies in oil and gas and in construction
The number of job vacancies decreased by 10 per cent from the 2nd quarter of 2015 to the same quarter of 2016. Oil and gas and construction showed a particular decrease, while domestic trade saw an increase.

There were 56 700 job vacancies in the 2nd quarter of 2016; 6 500 fewer than the same quarter the previous year. In line with the decrease in the number of job vacancies, the job vacancy rate decreased from 2.3 per cent in the 2nd quarter of 2015 to 2.0 in the same quarter of 2016. The job vacancy rate is measured as a percentage of the total number of jobs, i.e. the number of employees and vacancies.
In construction, the number of job vacancies decreased by 2 900 from the 2nd quarter of 2015 to the same quarter of 2016 – corresponding to a decrease of 45 per cent. It should be noted that the number of job vacancies for this industry was especially high in the 2nd quarter of 2015 compared to earlier years. The number of job vacancies for construction was 3 500 for the 2nd quarter of 2016, which is the lowest for the 2nd quarter over the last six years.
The decrease continued in mining and quarrying – an industry dominated by the production of oil and gas. There were 200 job vacancies in the 2nd quarter of 2016, compared to 600 in the same quarter of 2015. Back in 2012, the number was as high as 2 500 for this quarter.
Education saw a decrease of 33 per cent. The number of job vacancies in this sector was especially high in the 2nd quarter of 2015 compared to earlier years.
Increase in some industries
In domestic trade and car repair shop there were 6 700 job vacancies in the 2nd quarter of 2016. This is an increase of 1 300, or 24 per cent, from the same quarter the previous year. In information and communication the number of job vacancies increased from 2 200 in the 2nd quarter of 2015 to 2 800 in the same quarter of 2016.
A small growth in job vacancies in the EU
The job vacancy rate in the EU was 1.8 per cent in the 1st quarter of 2016, up 0.1 percentage point from the same quarter the previous year. The comparison with other countries is based on the 1st quarter of 2016 as the figures for the 2nd quarter of 2016 have not yet been published. In addition, agriculture, forestry and fishing are excluded.
The job vacancy rates between countries in the EEA vary considerably. In the 1st quarter of 2016, the job vacancy rate was 0.7 in Portugal and Spain, and 0.8 in Poland. At the same time, the job vacancy rate was 2.5 in Sweden and Germany, and 2.4 in the United Kingdom. By comparison, Norway had a job vacancy rate of 2.0 per cent in the 1st quarter of 2016.
