Average monthly earnings up NOK 1 300

Full-time employees in professional, scientific and technical activities had average monthly earnings of NOK 45 600 as per 1 September 2009, excluding overtime pay. This was a year-on-year increase of1NOK 13 000 or 2.9 per cent.

This division in the standard industrial classification includes a wide range of activities, with large dispersions of wage levels and wage changes. Legal and accounting activities, management consultancy services, architectural activities, technical consultancy, scientific research and development, and advertising and market research are some of the categories included. Average monthly earnings vary from approximately NOK 40 000 in legal and accounting activities to about NOK 49 000 in engineering activities and related technical consultancy.

Legal and accounting activities are mostly made up of judicial advice, accounting, auditing services, bookkeeping and tax consultancy. Due to reduced bonuses in 2009, we find a year-on-year reduction in average monthly earnings of 0.2 per cent. Basic salaries are unchanged from 2008 to 2009, at NOK 38 700.

Professionals, such as lawyers and accountants constitute a major part of this division and had average monthly earnings of NOK 51 200. This is a year-on-year decrease of NOK 1 200, or 2.3 per cent. In contrast, clerks had earnings of NOK 31 400, up NOK 900.

Technical consultants and architects

Engineering activities and related technical consultancy, such as design and planning in road construction, management of water pipelines, or geological surveys, have a high proportion of employees with college or university degrees. Close to four out of five in this division belong to this category, and had a wage increase of 0.6 and 3.3 per cent respectively. Employees in architectural activities had a rise of 4 per cent, to NOK 44 000.

Advertising and market research

Full-time employees in advertising had a fairly high wage increase of 5.4 per cent. Graphic designers and other associate professionals had earnings of NOK 42 500; an increase of 11.8 per cent. This is largely due to structural changes in this division.

Annual salaries

Estimated annual salaries in professional, scientific and technical activities as a whole were NOK 549 900, and vary from NOK 513 000 in advertising and market research to NOK 573 100 in architectural and engineering activities.

Publications of wage statistics in 2009 apply a new standard industrial classification (SIC2007). Wage statistics 2008/2009 presented here are thus according to the new standard.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises covering a total of 45 703 full-time employees and 5 971 part-time employees. According to the Norwegian Central Register of Enterprises and Establishments as per September 2009, professional, scientific and technical activities comprises in total 100 500 employees.

The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included, but is presented in the statistics separately. Basic salary is measured as per 1 September, while bonuses, variable additional allowances and payment for overtime work are calculated from the annual sum as a monthly average.

The procedure of measuring increases in monthly earnings differs somewhat from that of calculating increases in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while changes in annual earnings are measured from one calendar year to the next. The calculation of annual earnings is based on information from both the current and previous year, as well as information from the quarterly wage indices. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the following year have been compiled.
