Annual earnings increased by 5.2 per cent

The estimated average annual earnings for full-time employees in private health and social work activities were NOK 271 100 in 2002. This was an increase of NOK 13 400 or 5.2 per cent from 2001.

Employees in health activities had the highest annual earnings with NOK 293 000, an increase of NOK 14 000 or 5 per cent from October 2001. Health activities include hospital activities, medical practice and dental practice activities as well as physiotherapeutic treatment and day and night care.

In social work activities average annual earnings were NOK 257 900, an increase of NOK 12 400 or 5.1 per cent from the previous year. Included in social work activities are activities such as running institutions, day care, after-school programmes and leisure-time clubs as well as sheltered workshops and welfare organizations.

The estimated annual earnings are based on the assumption that salaries are paid for 12 months of the year andholiday pay supplement is not included. Annual earnings include basic paid wages and salaries, variable additional allowances, bonuses and commissions and the like, but do not include overtime pay. Information from wage statistics from two years is used for the calculation.

Monthly earnings

Full-time employees in private health and social work activities had NOK 22 900 in average monthly earnings, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 5.2 per cent from October 2001.

Average monthly earnings are the main term in the wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. Payment for overtime work is not included in monthly earnings. The increase in monthly earnings differs somewhat from the increase in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while the change in annual earning is from one calendar year to the next.

4.5 per cent increase in health activities

Full-time employees in health activities had average monthly earnings of NOK 24 700, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.5 per cent from 2001. Of the professionals, doctors had monthly earnings of NOK 42 900. This was an increase of NOK 2 100 or 5.2 per cent from the previous year. Nurses had monthly earnings of NOK 24 500, an increase of NOK 900 or 3.9 per cent. By comparison state enrolled nurses had NOK 20 700 in monthly earnings. This was an increase of NOK 300 or 1.3 per cent from 2001.

5.4 per cent increase in social work activities

Full-time employees in social work activities had average monthly earnings of NOK 21 800, an increase of NOK 1 100 or 4.5 per cent from 2001. Technicians and associate professionals had monthly earnings of NOK 22 600. This was an increase of NOK 900 or 4.3 per cent. By comparison full-time service workers and those in care-giving occupations had monthly earnings of NOK 18 800, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 5.6 per cent from October 2001.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises which cover a total of 16 362 full-time employees and 13 349 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the third quarter 2002, the statistics cover about 67 000 employees in private health and social work activities.
