Monthly earnings in hotels and restaurants up NOK 900

Full-time employees in hotels and restaurants had total monthly earnings of NOK 21 700 per 1 October 2003. This is an increase of NOK 900 or 4.1 per cent from 1 October 2002.

About one half of all full-time employees in this industry work in hotels and other provision and short-stay accommodations. Their average monthly earnings were NOK 21 700 - an increase of NOK 700 or 3.5 per cent from 1 October 2002. In comparison, full-time employees in restaurants and bars averaged at monthly earnings of NOK 21 500, an increase of NOK 1 000 or 5.1 per cent. Full-time employees in canteens and catering had monthly earnings of NOK 23 100, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.4 per cent.

Hotels, camping sites and other provision and short-stay accommodations

Service workers make out the largest employment group in this category. On the average, the monthly earnings of this group were NOK 20 400, an increase of NOK 500 or 2.6 per cent from 2002.

Among service workers, cooks had monthly earnings of NOK 21 000. Headwaiters, waiters, waitresses and bartenders had monthly earnings of NOK 19 900 - an increase of NOK 400 or 2.0 per cent and NOK 900 or 4.7 per cent, respectively. Receptionists had monthly earnings of NOK 20 500, a growth of NOK 300 or 1.7 per cent from 2002.

Restaurants and bars

About fifty per cent of all employees in restaurants and bars are service workers. Their average monthly earnings were NOK 20 000, an increase of NOK 900 or 4.5 per cent. In this category, headwaiters, waiters, waitresses and bartenders had average monthly earnings of NOK 19 500. This corresponds to a growth of NOK 900 or 4.8 per cent. In comparison, cooks had average monthly earnings of NOK 20 600, an increase of NOK 400 or 2.0 per cent.

Canteens and catering

Service workers in this category had monthly earnings of NOK 23 100 on the average. This is an increase of NOK 1 200 or 5.6 per cent from 1 October 2002. In comparison, cleaners had monthly earnings of NOK 20 500, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.9 per cent.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises counting 13 794 full-time employees. According to figures from the National accounts for the third quarter 2003, the statistics cover around 65 500 employees.
