Full-time employees in municipalities and county municipalities had average monthly earnings of NOK 33 700, excluding overtime pay, as per 1 December 2009. This is an increase of NOK 1 200, or 3.7 per cent from 2008.

Wage differences

Technicians and associate professionals is the largest occupational group in municipalities and county municipalities. Here we find teachers in primary and lower secondary schools and also a larger number of other professions that requires up to three years of higher education.

The wage difference between men and women are relatively large in this occupational group as a whole. Men had average monthly earnings of NOK 34 900, whereas women had NOK 33 400. This gave an increase of 3.3 and 3.4 per cent, respectively, from 2008 to 2009.

Eight out of ten engineers and technicians are men, with monthly earnings of NOK 36 300. In occupations such as social work, child welfare and protective caregivers we find a dominance of women with average monthly earnings of NOK 31 400.

Men in professional positions had average monthly earnings of NOK 38 300, while women had NOK 36 300. This corresponds to a wage growth of 3.5 per cent for men, and 3.8 per cent for women.

Teaching occupations

Teachers in upper secondary education had NOK 37 500 in average monthly earnings while teachers in primary schools had NOK 35 400. Both groups had a wage growth of NOK 1 200 from 2008 to 2009. Males in this group earned NOK 200-300 more per month than their female colleagues.

Part-time employees

More than a half of all employees in municipalities and county municipalities are part time workers, and of these the major part are women working as care workers. To be able to compare earnings for full-time and part-time employees the earnings for a part-time employee is recalculated to the earnings a full-time employee would receive. Part-time employees in municipalities had average monthly earnings of NOK 31 100 in 2009. The wage growth from 2008 was NOK 1 100. Part-time employed men earned NOK 32 800, while women had monthly earnings of NOK 30 800.
