Wages in manufacturing up 1.1 per cent
The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in the manufacturing industry shows a 1.1 per cent increase in monthly earnings from the 1st quarter 2003 to the 2nd quarter 2003. The increase from the 2nd quarter 2002 to the 2nd quarter 2003 was 5.4 per cent.
The increase in monthly earnings for employees in the construction industry was 0.5 per cent from the 1st quarter 2003 to the 2nd quarter 2003. The corresponding growth for employees in transport and communication was 0.9 per cent in the same period. Employees in wholesale and retail trade received an increase of 0.6 per cent in their monthly earnings from the 1st quarter 2003 to the 2nd quarter 2003, employees in electricity supply had a growth of 1.1 per cent, while the corresponding growth for employees in real estate and business activities was 0.7 per cent. Employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had a 2.2 per cent reduction in their monthly earnings.
Change over a year
Employees in the construction industry had a 5.2 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the 2nd quarter 2002 to the 2nd quarter of 2003. The corresponding growth for employees in electricity supply was 6.9 per cent, while the increase for employees in transport and communication was 4.4 per cent. Wholesale and retail trade, monthly earnings for employees in the same period increased by 3.1 percent. Employees in real estate and business activities had a growth in monthly earnings of 3.6 per cent from the 2nd quarter 2002 to the 2nd quarter of 2003. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 5 per cent.
Hotels and restaurants
An index for a new industry is presented in this release. The index is for full-time employees in hotels and restaurants. The index is based on 1st quarter 2003=100. The increase in monthly earnings for employees in hotels and restaurants was from the 1st quarter 2003 to the 2nd quarter of 2003 1.5 per cent.
Sample
The sample for the 2nd quarter of 2003 includes approximately 230,600 full-time employees, broken down into 69,000 in manufacturing, 26,200 in construction, 49,600 in transport and communication, 34,800 in wholesale and retail trade, 29,100 in real estate and business activities, 3,300 in hotels and restaurants, 16,100 in oil and gas extraction and mining and 2,500 in electricity supply. By comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the 2nd quarter of 2003 show that about 26,500 persons are employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 274,900 in manufacturing, 110,500 in construction, 151,000 in transport and communication, 312,200 in wholesale and retail trade, 211,600 in real estate and business activities, 64,000 in hotels and restaurants and 15,000 in electricity supply. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
