Wages in manufacturing up 0.2 per cent

The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in the manufacturing industry shows a 0.2 per cent increase in monthly earnings from the 3rd quarter 2003 to the 4th quarter 2003. The increase from the 4th quarter 2002 to the 4th quarter 2003 was 3.9 per cent.

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in transport and communication was 0.4 per cent from the 3rd quarter 2003 to the 4th quarter 2003. The corresponding growth for employees in hotels and restaurants was 1.3 per cent in the same period. Employees in wholesale and retail trade received an increase of 1.7 per cent in their monthly earnings from the 3rd quarter 2003 to the 4th quarter 2003, employees in electricity supply the growth was unchanged from 3 quarter 2003. The growth for employees in real estate and business activities was 0.4 per cent. Employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had a 0.9 per cent reduction in their monthly earnings, while the employees in the construction industry had a 2.5 per cent reduction.

Change over a year

Employees in the construction industry had a 2.9 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the 4th quarter 2002 to the 4th quarter of 2003. The corresponding growth for employees in electricity supply was 4.4 per cent, while the increase for employees in transport and communication was 2.8 per cent., Monthly earnings for employees in wholesale and retail trade increased by 3.2 per cent in the same period. Employees in real estate and business activities had a growth in monthly earnings of 3.8 per cent from the 4th quarter 2002 to the 4th quarter of 2003. The corresponding growth for employees in oil and gas extraction and mining was 3.4 per cent.

Sample

The sample for the 4th quarter of 2003 includes approximately 236 900 full-time employees, broken down into 71 800 in manufacturing, 27 100 in construction, 50 200 in transport and communication, 30 800 in wholesale and retail trade, 31 300 in real estate and business activities, 4 000 in hotels and restaurants, 18 900 in oil and gas extraction and mining and 2 800 in electricity supply. By comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the 3rd quarter of 2003 show that about 23 700 persons are employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 270 900 in manufacturing, 115 200 in construction, 152 000 in transport and communication, 316 000 in wholesale and retail trade, 208 700 in real estate and business activities, 65 500 in hotels and restaurants and 15 400 in electricity supply. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
