Wage index, Q2 2004, preliminary figures

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in transport and communication was 0.8 per cent. The corresponding growth for employees in the construction industry was 0.7 per cent. Employees in wholesale and retail trade achieved a 0.5 per cent increase in their monthly earnings, while the growth for employees in hotels and restaurants was 1.0 per cent. The growth for employees in real estate and business activities was 0.3 per cent. Employees in electricity supply achieved an increase of 0.3 per cent, while employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had a 2.4 per cent reduction in their monthly earnings.

Annual growth

Employees in the construction industry achieved a 3.4 per cent growth in monthly earnings from the second quarter of 2003 to the second quarter of 2004. The growth for employees in electricity supply and the manufacturing industry was 7.9 per cent and 4.5 per cent respectively, while the increase for employees in transport and communication was 3.3 per cent. In wholesale and retail trade monthly earnings increased by 3.7 percent. Employees in real estate and business activities had a 3.5 per cent growth in monthly earnings, whereas employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had a 1.1 per cent growth.

Sample

The sample for the second quarter of 2004 includes approximately 245 000 full-time employees, broken down on 77 600 in manufacturing, 27 100 in construction, 51 100 in transport and communication, 30 400 in wholesale and retail trade, 31 200 in real estate and business activities, 4 600 in hotels and restaurants, 19 700 in oil and gas extraction and mining and 3 300 in electricity supply. In comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the first quarter of 2004 show that about 26 700 persons are employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 261 700 in manufacturing, 111 300 in construction, 147 700 in transport and communication, 311 200 in wholesale and retail trade, 202 800 in real estate and business activities, 61 700 in hotels and restaurants and 14 800 in electricity supply. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
