Wholesale and retail wages up 1.5 per cent

The quarterly wage index for full-time employees in wholesale and retail trade shows a 1.5 per cent increase in monthly earnings from the third quarter of 2004 to the fourth quarter of 2004.

The increase in monthly earnings for employees in electricity supply was 1.2 per cent from the third quarter of 2004 to the fourth quarter of 2004. The corresponding growth for employees in the real estate and business activities was 1.3 per cent. Employees in manufacturing had a 0.2 per cent reduction in their monthly earnings. The growth for employees in transport and communication was 1.1 per cent. Employees in hotels and restaurants had an increase of 1.2 per cent, while employees in oil and gas extraction and mining had a 0.8 per cent increase in their monthly earnings.

Sample

The sample for the fourth quarter of 2004 includes approximately 175 400 full-time employees, broken down into 77 500 in manufacturing, 61 400 in transport and communication, 47 500 in wholesale and retail trade, 37 700 in real estate and business activities, 6 000 in hotels and restaurants, 19 800 in oil and gas extraction and mining and 3 000 in electricity supply. In comparison, the preliminary figures in the national accounts for the third quarter of 2004 show that about 27 700 persons are employed in oil and gas extraction and mining, 260 800 in manufacturing, 147 900 in transport and communication, 321 100 in wholesale and retail trade, 210 500 in real estate and business activities, 63 100 in hotels and restaurants and 14 300 in electricity supply. The figures from the national accounts also include part-time employees.
