Average monthly earnings are the main term in Statistics Norways wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic paid salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses, commissions and the like. Payment for overtime work is not included in monthly earnings. The increase in monthly earnings differs somewhat from the increase in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while the change in annual earning is from one calendar year to the next.

About 25 per cent of all employees in oil and gas extraction are craft and related workers, machine operators and drivers. This occupational group obtained monthly earnings of NOK 36 800, an increase of NOK 1 900 or 5.5 per cent from the previous year.

By comparison additional allowances of employees in mining are in average less than NOK 1 000 or 3.7 per cent of monthly earnings.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises that cover a total of 21 972 full-time employees and 868 part time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts from third quarter 2002, the statistics cover around 27 200 employees in oil and gas extraction and mining.

The estimated annual earnings for 2002 are preliminary until wage statistics for 2003 are established. Due to changes in the reporting system for occupations in 2002 it has not been possible to publish tables on occupation quite similar to those of previous years.

A number of employees in the statistics for 2002 are, according to changes in the agreement on working hours, registered with 30 to 33 working hours per week.
