Increase in wages of 3.9 per cent
Full-time employees in oil and gas extraction had average monthly earnings exclusive overtime earnings of NOK 54 100 in October 2008, an increase of NOK 2 000 or 3.9 per cent from the previous year.
Average bonuses were estimated at a lower level compared to 2007 due to the fact that larger part of the industry paid bonuses in the 3rd quarter of 2007 instead of the 1st quarter as usual. The basic salary by comparison increased by 3.6 per cent from NOK 43 900 to NOK 45 500. Full-time employees in mining had average monthly earnings of NOK 34 900, an increase of 3.8 per cent from the previous year.
Underlying wage increase
Structural changes, as well as results from the wage negotiations, will influence the recorded changes in earnings. Among other factors this includes changes in the employment pattern, working time and profession. The development of average earnings is also influenced by the wage increase and the amount of employees who join and leave the work force in the particular group of industry or switch to some other industry.
In this case it is rather informative to study the underlying wage increase, or the increase in wages for identical full-time employees in the same profession and same enterprise two years in a row. The underlying wage increase was estimated at 8.8 per cent for oil and gas extraction and at 6.1 per cent for mining.
Professionals
Professionals, technicians and associate professionals represent a large share of employees in the oil sector as well as in mining, with a wage increase of 5.9 per cent and 6.6 per cent accordingly. Average monthly earnings for this group in oil and gas extraction amounted to NOK 46 700, while in mining the earnings were NOK 32 200.
Average annual earnings
In 2008, the estimated average annual earnings of full-time employees in oil and gas extraction were NOK 643 100, an increase of 4.5 per cent compared to 2007. Annual earnings of full-time employees in mining increased by 5.7 per cent to NOK 414 400.
About the statistical basisThe statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises covering a total of 34 167 full-time employees and 530 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the 3rd quarter of 2008, the statistics cover approximately 48 000 employees in oil and gas extraction and mining. The term average monthly earnings is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included, but is present in the statistics separately. Basic salary for financial intermediation is measured per 1. October, while bonuses, variable additional allowances and payment for overtime work are calculated from the annual sum as a monthly average. The procedure of measuring increase in monthly earnings differs somewhat from that of calculating increase in annual earnings. Monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while change in annual earnings is measured from one calendar year to the next. Calculation of annual earnings is based on information from both the current and previous year, as well as information from wage negotiations. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the following year have been compiled. |
