Monthly earnings increased by NOK 1 200

As of the first of October 2001, full-time employees in transport and communication had average monthly earnings of NOK 25 700. This was an increase of 5.0 per cent from the same time the year before.

Full-time employees in air transport had the highest average monthly earnings, with NOK 32 500, an increase of NOK 2 600 or 8.9 per cent from the previous year. Part of the increase is due to wages lag from the wage settlement in 2000. Full-time employees in water transport had average monthly earnings of NOK 27 000 as of October 2001. This amounted to about NOK 1 200, or 4.5 per cent more than the year before. By comparison, the monthly earnings of employees in land transport were NOK 21 400, an increase of NOK 900 or 4.4 per cent.

Land transport

Land transport comprises scheduled road transport, other passenger transport and goods transport by road.

The largest occupational group in passenger transport, drivers, received an average of NOK 19 500 per month. This corresponds to an increase of NOK 700, or 3.8 per cent from the same time the year before. For managers, monthly earnings were NOK 30 100 in 2001, an increase of NOK 1 900 or 6.7 per cent.

Full-time employees in goods transport had generally higher wages than their colleagues in scheduled road transport and other transport of passengers. Drivers in goods transport had average earnings of NOK 21 300 per month, an increase of NOK 800 or 3.9 per cent from the same time the year before.

The average monthly earnings of managers were NOK 34 300, an increase of NOK 1 400 or 4.4 per cent.

Water transport

This division includes sea and costal water transport and inland water transport.

The dominant occupational group is technicians, machinists, mates etc. This group earned an average of NOK 30 100 per month, an increase of NOK 1 400 or 4.8 per cent. By comparison, managers and professionals had monthly earnings of NOK 43 300, an increase of NOK 2 000 or 4.9 per cent from the previous year.

Air transport

Air transport comprises scheduled and unscheduled air transport.

Pilots, aviation technicians and other technicians and associated professionals earned an average of NOK 48 300 per month, an increase of NOK 3 800, or 8.5 per cent. Pilots have the highest earnings with an average of NOK 59 200 in monthly earnings per 1 October 2001.This was an increase of 8.3 per cent from the previous year. Stewardesses, pursers and other cabin crew had NOK 25 600 in monthly earnings, while their colleagues in leading administrative positions, on the other hand, received average monthly earnings of NOK 43 700, an increase of 8.1 and 9.8 per cent, respectively, from the year before.

Transport-related services

Transport related services include loading, unloading, warehousing and other transport-related services. Most full-time employees were employed in office, sales and customer service occupations and had average monthly earnings of NOK 21 100, an increase of NOK 700 or 3.2 per cent from 2000. Managers had monthly earnings of NOK 36 500, an increase of 1 800 or 5.1 per cent.

The dominant occupational group in travel agencies, tourist offices and tour operators is clerks who had average monthly earnings of NOK 20 600, an increase of 4.7 per cent from the year before. By comparison, full-time sales and customer service occupations had monthly earnings of NOK 21 000, an increase of NOK 900 or 4.6 per cent.

Managers in post and telecommunications had monthly earnings of NOK 45 800, an increase of NOK 2 300 or 5.4 per cent. By comparison, full-time technicians and associated professionals had monthly earnings of NOK 29 000. This was an increase of NOK 1 300 or 4.7 per cent from 2000.

Estimated annual earnings: NOK 289 700

Full-time employees in transport and communication, including Postal Administration and Norwegian State Railways, had estimated average annual earnings of NOK 289 700 in 2001. Employees in land transport had average annual earnings of NOK 261 200 and in water transport the average annual earnings were NOK 319 400. In air transport the average annual earnings were NOK 381 300. By comparison full-time employees in transport related services, post and telecommunication had average annual earnings of NOK 288 100.

About the statistical basis

The statistics are based on information from a sample of enterprises with altogether 44 044 full-time employees and 7 393 part-time employees (exclusive Postal Administration and Norwegian State Railways). According to preliminary figures from the National Accounts for the 3rd quarter 2001, the statistics cover around 122 000 transport and communication workers.
