Monthly earnings up 6.9 per cent

Average monthly earnings excluding overtime pay of full-time employees in transport and communication were NOK 35 100 as at 1 October 2008. This was an increase of NOK 2 300 or 6.9 per cent from the corresponding period in 2007.

The section transport and communications section consists of the divisions land transport, water transport, air transport, supporting and auxiliary transport activities and activities of travel agencies and post and telecommunications. The average monthly earnings vary from NOK 29 200 in land transport to NOK 44 700 in telecommunications.

Annual earnings

In 2008, the estimated annual earnings of full-time employees in transport and communication were NOK 409 200, an increase of 5.7 per cent or NOK 22 000 from 2007. The average annual earnings of employees in air transport were NOK 521 500, an increase of 5.9 per cent. In comparison, employees in land transport had average annual earnings of NOK 339 600, an increase of 5.5 per cent.

The statistics are based on a sample of enterprises with 77 448 full-time employees and 19 423 part-time employees. According to preliminary figures from the national accounts for the third quarter of 2007, the statistics cover about 168 900 employees in transport and communication. The figures for 2007 have been corrected. The correction has been done in the division “Supporting and auxiliary transport activities and activities of travel agencies”. This means that there is a break in the time series for this division between 2006 and the new figures for 2007.

The term “average monthly earnings” is the main term in Statistics Norway's wage statistics. Monthly earnings cover basic salaries, variable additional allowances and bonuses. Payment for overtime work is not included. The increase in monthly earnings differs somewhat from the increase in annual earnings. The monthly earnings are compared at a specific date each year, while the change in annual earnings is from one calendar year to the next. Information for two years is used in the calculation, as well as information from wage negotiations. Estimated annual earnings for the current year are preliminary until wage statistics for the following year have been compiled.
