Rising employment in technical occupations and care services
The increase in employment from 2005 to 2006 mainly took place among technicians and associate professionals (major group 3) and service workers and shop and market sales workers (major group 5). These are some of the results from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) for 2006.
The increase in employment among technicians etc was particularly noticeable for engineers and administrative and economic associate professionals. Among service workers etc the rise in employment mainly took place among care assistants.
There has been a growth in the number of female managers from 2001 to 2006. While one in four managers in 2001 were women, this applied to one in three in 2006. This is mainly due to the large number of women employed in the public sector (70 per cent). Half of the managers in the public sector were women in 2006. The private sector is still dominated by male managers and male employment in general.
