Issues of bonds continue to increase

Issues of bonds increased by 49 per cent in the second quarter 2002 compared with the corresponding period in 2001. Mortgage companies increased the most by NOK 8.1 billion, or 249.4 per cent.

During 2002 the total amount of bond issues in Norway was NOK 65.7 billion, an increase of NOK 21.7 billion, or 49.4 per cent from June last year. The Central government issued NOK 11 billion worth of bonds during this year, an increase of 37.5 per cent compared with June 2001. The Central government bond issues represent 16.7 per cent of the total amount of issues. Commercial banks issued NOK 13.8 billion. Savings banks issued NOK 14.8 billion worth of bonds. Mortgage companies had the strongest increase in the 2.quarter of NOK 8.1 billion or 249.4 per cent.

Domestic bond debt at 30 June 2002 was NOK 454.5 billion. This is an increase in outstanding debt of NOK 36 billion, or 8.61 per cent compared with 2001. The Central government debt by NOK 139.8 billion represents 30.8 per cent of the total outstanding debt.

Issues of commercial papers increased by 4.8 per cent

Issues of commercial papers increased by NOK 8.5 billion or 4.8 per cent compared with the corresponding period last year. So far in 2002 the total amount of commercial paper issues in Norway was NOK 186.1 billion. The issues of commercial papers at the same time last year were amounted to NOK 177.6 billion. Domestic debt at the end of June 2002 was NOK 133.7 billion compared with NOK 125 billion in the corresponding period in 2001. Savings banks issued NOK 42.5 billion worth of bonds, 22.8 per cent of the total amount of commercial paper issues. The Central government issues came to NOK 31 billion, while commercial banks issued NOK 41.1 billion worth of commercial papers.

Issues abroad in NOK and foreign currency

Statistics on issues of bonds and commercial papers offered abroad in NOK and foreign currency are obtained from the Norwegian Central Bank. From the first quarter 2001 special ECP and USCP programmes are included.

The statistics show that issues during 2002 amounted to NOK 146.2 billion. Mortgage companies are the largest borrowers in the foreign market, with NOK 108.1 billion.
