Decrease in issues of debt securities

Issues of debt securities in Norway and Norwegian entities' issues of debt securities abroad declined in the first half of 2007. However, a major part of Norwegian entities’ issues are still made abroad.

In June 2007, 92 bond issues valued at NOK 21.6 billion and 92 issues of commercial papers valued at NOK 21.5 billion were registered in Norway. Norwegian entities issued 188 debt securities valued at NOK 66.7 billion abroad.

During the first half of 2007, 930 issues of debt securities valued at NOK 230.9 billion were registered in Norway, a decrease of 3.9 and 2 per cent respectively compared with the first half of 2006. The majority of issues in the first half of 2007 were issues of commercial papers (479), but issues of bonds represented the largest value (NOK 120.9 billion). In comparison, 51 per cent of the number of issues and 54 per cent of the value of issues in the first half of 2006 referred to bonds.

As in the first half of 2006, the largest number of issues (330) and the largest value (NOK 55.7 billion) of debt securities were by commercial and savings banks. Private companies accounted for the second largest number of issues (185) and value (NOK 51.5 billion).

At the end of June 2007, domestic bond debt amounted to NOK 729.5 billion and domestic commercial paper debt NOK 106.3 billion, compared with NOK 657.9 billion and NOK 120.9 billion at the end of June 2006.

The majority of Norwegian residents’ issues of debt securities are made abroad. In the first half of 2007, Norwegian entities issued 1 147 commercial papers valued at NOK 343.0 billion abroad. This represents no change in the number of issues compared with the first half of 2006, but the value of the issues was 20.5 per cent lower than in the first half of 2006. The major part of these issues refer to commercial and savings banks and ‘other financial corporations’.
