Centralisation is increasing

Every year we see a net flow of relocations to the most central parts of the country. The trend in recent years has been increasing out-migration from the least central municipalities and a noticeable increase in in-migration to the most central municipalities. Immigrants are much more mobile than other people, and many move to the area around the Oslo Fjord.

Municipalities by centrality

Internal net migration by centrality. 1994-2006

During 2006, 202 000 relocations between municipalities were registered in Norway, an increase of 8 400 from 2005. The number of relocations in 2006 was at a level with 2000 and 2001. The mobility, measured in relocations per 1 000 residents, was higher in these two years than in 2006.

Majority do not move far

In 2006, there were 81 000 relocations between regions and 38 000 between counties in the regions. 84 000 thousand relocations were from one municipality to another in the same county. Of the 596 000 domestic relocations registered in 2006, 394 000 were within municipalities. This is 4 000 more than the previous year.

Immigrants have very centralised relocation patterns

Immigrants and their children accounted for a considerable part of domestic relocations in Norway in 2006. They accounted for one third of net relocations from the rest of the country to the most central municipalities and one fourth of total out-migrations from the least central municipalities.
