4 681 400 residents in Norway at the end of 2006

The population growth is estimated to be 41 200, or 0.9 per cent in 2006. At the turn of the year 4 681 499 people will be resident in Norway, according to figures from Statistics Norway.

45 per cent of the population growth - some 18 500 - is due to the birth surplus, while 55 per cent - some 22 700 - is due to a net in-migration from abroad. The birth surplus in 2005 numbered 15 500, whereas the net in-migration from abroad numbered 18 400.

The population is calculated for the whole country, the counties and the municipalities, based on information from the population register, using data on births, deaths, in- and out -migration until November 1st 2006. The population growth in November and December is calculated using the same relative growth as in the same months in 2005. If the number of births, deaths and migrations change essentially from November and December last year compared to the same months this year, the population will vary correspondingly. Due to this, the population for January 1st 2007 has to be seen as an estimate.
