Still high population growth

The population in Norway increased by 58 900 in 2009, which is 3 100 less than in 2008. The population growth is still on a high level historically. At the turn of the year, there were 4 858 200 residents in Norway.

In relative terms, the population increase was high in 2009, with a growth of 1.23 per cent. In the previous year - 2008 - the corresponding growth was 1.31 per cent, the highest since 1920.

364 000 children under 6 years of age

At the turn of the year, 7.5 per cent of the residents were children under the age of 6. The proportion of children under 6 years of age was twice as high in 1900, when it was 15 per cent. From 1900 to 2010 the number of children under 6 years of age has varied between 244 100 (1938) and 394 400 (1972).

Nearly 13 per cent of the population were in the age group 6-15 years, and people aged 16-19 years made up 5.3 per cent of the population.

The proportion of children 0-5 years of age varies from 3 to close to 10 per cent of the total population among the municipalities.

Most elderly in Hedmark, fewest in Akershus and Rogaland

Over 60 per cent of the residents were in the age group 20-66 years, whereas 8 per cent were in the age group 67-79 years. The oldest, 80 years and over, made up 4.5 per cent of the population. Among the municipalities, Hedmark had the highest proportion of residents 80 years and over, while Akershus had the fewest in this age group.

There are 2 426 750 males, and 2 431 450 females in total population, and 4 700 more females than males. In the age groups up to 65 years there are more males than females, whereas among people over 65 there are more females than males. At the turn of the year there were 220 000 in the age group 80 years and over, of which 77 600 were males and 142 400 were females an excess of females of 831 per cent.
