From detached houses to blocks

Since 1997 the portion of new dwellings in blocks of flats increased considerably. At the same time the share of new detached houses has had a significant decrease.

The number of started dwellings by type of building. 1983-2003

Final figures from Statistics Norway's building statistics show that the municipalities recorded 23 177 started dwellings in Norway in 2003. Of these 7 076, or 30 per cent, are dwellings in blocks of 3 floors or more. The high yearly figures for start of block dwellings were only exceeded at the end of the 1960'ies and the first half of the 1970'ies.

After the low 1992, the number of yearly started dwellings in detached houses - one bed sits and basement flats included - started to increase to above 11 000 dwellings in 1997. Then followed a period of decrease to the present level of 7 300 dwellings in 2003.

Record high block building in Oslo

In Oslo 2 218 dwellings where started in blocks of 2 floors or more last year. This is 68 per cent more than the previous year, and 13 per cent more than the high level in 2001. Only in 1989 the level of started block dwellings in Oslo was higher.

Industry buildings

3 816 000 square meters of utility floor space were registered started for other purposes than dwellings in 2003. This is 1 per cent more space than in the previous year. "Holiday houses and residential garages" is the building category with the highest portion - 958 000 square meters. The categories "office and business buildings" and "manufacturing buildings and warehouses" follows with 679 000 and 600 000 square meters respectively of utility floor space.

Building of dwellings in Sweden

According to preliminary figures from Statistics Sweden , 23 000 dwellings were started in Sweden in 2003. The number of started dwellings per 1 000 inhabitants is 2.6 in Sweden against 5.0 in Norway. The share of dwellings in detached houses, houses with two dwellings, row houses and other small houses is 40 per cent in Sweden. The corresponding portion in Norway is 53 per cent.

Revised figures

In 2001, 2002 and at the beginning of 2003 the recording of non-residential buildings in the municipality of Oslo was imperfect, and previously published figures has been to low. The revised figures for 2001, 2002 and 2003 are now published, and the statistics include all industrial buildings in Oslo.
