Decreased domestic use of natural gas
Net domestic consumption of natural gas decreased by 4 per cent last year and came to 317 million Sm3, equivalent to 3 148 GWh. The reduction was primarily within the manufacturing industries.
The reduced consumption of natural gas in the manufacturing industries is connected to reduced production because of the financial crisis.
Natural gas still only makes up a small proportion of total domestic use of energy. In 2009, natural gas only accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total net consumption of energy. See Energy balance and energy accounts
In addition to net domestic consumption, 4 883 GWh natural gas was used for non-energy purposes in the manufacturing industries, 48 317 GWh was consumed by the energy sector and 7 731 GWh was converted into other energy bearers.
Natural gas can be transported in pipelines, as liquefied natural gas (LNG) or as compressed natural gas (CNG).
