Stable turnover in manufacturing

Turnover in manufacturing was approximately NOK 43 billion in August 2002, an increase of 0.5 per cent from August last year. Revenues in intermediate goods and energy goods are experiencing a decrease, of 2.6 per cent and 17.9 per cent respectively. Capital goods and consumer goods experience an increase of 3.5 per cent and 7.4 per cent respectively.

Decrease in intermediate goods

Changes within intermediate goods are related to a decrease within export-related industries. The turnover in pulp, paper and paper products and basic chemicals continue to decline. The turnover in August 2002 for pulp, paper and paper products was NOK1.1 billion, a decrease of 24.3 per cent compared with the same period in 2001. Basic chemicals turnover was NOK 1.6 billion, and represents a 32.5 per cent drop compared with the same month last year. The turnover within the manufacturing of food product, beverages and tobacco shows an increase of 15.6 per cent and publishing, printing and reproduction shows an increase of 13.9 per cent, compared with August last year.

Total revenues within manufacturing have declined by 2.4 per cent from January to August 2002, compared with same period last year. When comparing January to August 2002 with the same period last year, there has been an evident decline in turnover within manufacturing of pulp, paper and paper products and basic chemicals. The turnover in pulp, paper and paper products was approximately NOK 10 billion, a 20.2 per cent lower figure compared with the same period last year. Turnover in basic metals was NOK 14 billion, a decline of 26.5 per cent.

Fabricated metal products and machinery and equipment are experiencing an increase in total revenues. Turnover in fabricated metal products was NOK 15 billion, an increase of 10.2 per cent, and for machinery and equipment the figures so far this year show an increase of 14.6 per cent, with a turnover of nearly NOK 25 billion, when comparing January to August 2002 with the same period last year.

Revised figures for manufacturing of food, beverages and tobacco and electricity, gas and steam supply

New and more detailed information has made it necessary to revise previous published figures for the period January 2001 to July 2002. For most trades this involves minor changes whereas for the manufacturing of food, beverages and tobacco and electricity, gas and steam supply, the changes are significant.
