Decreased petroleum production in 2013

The total petroleum production on the Norwegian continental shelf in 2013 amounted to 215 million Sm3 oil equivalents (oe). Compared to 2012, this equals a decrease of 4.8 per cent. Both production of oil and gas decreased.

Oil production on the Norwegian continental shelf began in 1971 and peaked in 2000 when the production was 181 million Sm3 o.e. Since then, oil production has declined each year. The total production of oil amounted to 85 million Sm3 o.e. in 2013; a decrease of 4.8 per cent or 4.2 million Sm3 o.e. compared to 2012. There were 72 oil fields in production in 2013, four of which started production the same year; Hyme, Jette, Skarv and Skuld. Ekofisk was the oil field with the highest production, which constituted about 8.4 per cent of the total oil production.

Decreased gas production

Norway started gas production in 1977 and since then it has increased almost every year until 2012. In 2013, however, production fell by about 6 million Sm3 oe or 5.2 per cent compared with 2012. Gas production amounted to just below 109 million Sm3 oe in 2013. A total of 64 fields produced gas in 2013, three of which started production during the year. The field with the highest gas production is Troll, which started gas production in 1996. Troll accounted for just over 27 per cent of gas production on the Norwegian continental shelf last year.

In 2010, the production of gas exceeded the oil production for the first time. In 2013, oil accounted for 39.4 per cent of the total production, and gas accounted for 50.5 per cent. Production of NGL and condensate accounted for the remaining 10.1 per cent. In 2000, the oil and gas production made up 74.4 and 20.4 per cent of petroleum production respectively.

NGL and condensate

The total production of NGL (natural gas liquids) was 17.7 million Sm3 o.e. in 2013 .This is a slight decrease of 0.5 per cent compared with the year before. NGL production has remained relatively stable over the past eight years. The total production of condensate was approximately 4 million Sm3 o.e., which is a slight decrease from the previous year.
