We spend most on housing and transport

Housing still makes up the largest item of consumption spending, closely followed by transport. Recreation and culture is ranked as the third biggest spending item, while spending on food is number four.

Due to small annual samples it is only possible to publish results of groups of households when samples for three years are combined.

Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuel make up the largest expenditure item, with an average of NOK 81 250 per household per year in the period. This amounts to 26.7 per cent of the total spending.

Spending on transport appears to have stabilised. In the 2001-2003 period, spending on transport amounted to approximately one-fifth of household spending, with NOK 52 700.

The third largest item of household spending is recreation and culture, with NOK 38 350, or 12.6 per cent of the total spending in the period.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages make up NOK 35 050 per household per year, or 11.5 per cent in the period 2001-2003.

The share of spending on clothing and footwear has been stable over the past years, and makes up around 5 per cent on average in the period 2001-2003. The average household spent NOK 16 280 on clothing and footwear per year in the period.

Furniture and household equipment make up almost 7 per cent of spending on average. Average household spending is stable at just over NOK 21 370.

Private expenditure on health care is NOK 8 620, or 2.8 per cent of the total spending per year in the period.

Spending on communication (postage and telephone services) makes up 2.5 per cent of the total spending, or NOK 7 560 per year for the average household.

Education is a small expenditure item for the average household, at NOK 940 in the period 2001-2003, or 0.3 per cent of the total spending.
