Highest income among single parents in Finnmark

The highest after-tax-income among single parents with small children is found in Finnmark, while single parents in the Agder counties have the lowest income.

Percentage of total household income, single parents with children 0-5 years

Median after-tax income for single parents with children 0-5 years

In 2007, single parents with small children had a median income after tax of NOK 297 000, while single parents in Vest-Agder had an income after tax of NOK 263 000. The main explanation for the difference in income levels is a higher amount of income from work among single parents in our northernmost county. In addition, residents of Finnmark enjoy lower tax rates and a more generous child allowance.

The extent of participation in the labour force among single parents varies across counties. In Finnmark, income from work makes up almost 57 per cent of total household income among single parents with small children. Also in Rogaland, Sogn- og Fjordane and Akershus, income from work constitutes a large share of the single parents total income. In the Agder counties and Nord-Trøndelag, transfers and other incomes not stemming from work are the most important sources of income. Income from work amounted to 45 per cent of total household income for single parents in Vest-Agder in 2007.

Underlying data

The household income statistics include all registered income in cash received by private households in Norway during the calendar year. Since 2004, the household income statistics have been based solely on register data and include all persons in private households living in Norway at the end of the year. Persons living in nursing and retirement homes, and students, are not included in the figures. The data are described in more detail in About the statistics.
