Sør-Trøndelag: One of two holdings with trained holder
At almost half of the holdings in the county of Sør-Trøndelag one or both of the holders had one or another kind of agricultural education. Most had an education as agronomist, technician or more.
The results show that 44 per cent of the male holders had an agricultural education. Three fourths of these were educated as agronomist or more. Only every tenth female holder had an agricultural education, and half of them were educated as agronomist or more.
Fewer holdings and increased land rental
The number of holdings with agricultural land in use fell from 6 300 in 1989 to 4 800 in 1999, a reduction of 23 per cent. Agricultural area in use increased in this period by 6 per cent to 765 000 decares. Renting area went up in Sør-Trøndelag as in other counties, and the area increased 45 per cent since 1989. The rented area was in 1999 at 243 000 decares and represented 32 per cent of all area in use. A great part of the rented area was not under any written contract. The area under written contract was rented for at least 5 years. In 1999 the total expenditures for land rental were 17.7 millions NOK, an average expenditure of 107 NOK per decare
6 300 full time equivalent
All in all the labour input corresponded to 6 300 full-time equivalents at the holdings in Sør-Trøndelag. The total labour input was one full time equivalent or more in six out of ten holdings. On every fourth holding the labour input corresponded to less than half a full-time equivalent each. The holders themselves conducted 80 per cent of the labour input in agriculture and horticulture. Labour input in supplementary industries represented about 300 full-time equivalents in 1998/1999. Supplementary industries are activities that utilise a holding's land, buildings or machinery, and machinery related services are the most important ones.
Men take over properties
Men possessed 86 per cent of the properties with allodial rights and area in use. The number is not remarkable compared with results from other surveys. The Allodial Act entered into force in 1974, but had retroactive effect so girls born in 1965 or later were given the same rights as boys. The average age of persons taking over farms is just over 40 years of age, so the full impact of the Allodial Act has yet to be seen.
The census results show that almost one third of all properties with agricultural area in use in 1999 - regardless of allodial rights - were taken over in 1990-1999. 12 per cent were taken over before 1970.
Older tractors
Four out of five tractors in Sør-Trøndelag were older than ten years. In 1989 about two out of five tractors were older than ten years. In 1999 there were 10 000 tractors at holdings with at least 5 decares in use. On average there were 1.9 tractors per holding in 1989 and 2.1 tractors ten years later. The tractors are becoming bigger and stronger. I 1999 more than every second tractor had a four wheel drive. In 1989 twice as many tractors had a two-wheel drive compared with the number of tractors equipped with a four-wheel drive.
