Hordaland: 1 500 holdings hired machinery

About every fourth holding with agricultural land in use in Hordaland hired work done by machinery with operator for payment in 1998/1999. It was most common to hire work in connection to baling and packing of course fodder, and more than 1 000 holdings hired operators with machinery for such work.

All in all it was 5 200 holdings with cultivated meadow for mowing and pasturing, and the figures above indicate that at least every fifth holding used round bales to conserve course fodder.

About 700 holdings did contracting work for others for payment in 1998/1999. This represented more than 10 per cent of all holdings that operated agricultural land. Contract work for others comprise also work in other industries than agriculture, and most common was other contracting work as snow removal. 131 holdings did contracting work as mowing of course fodder, and almost 100 did baling and packing of course fodder for other holdings.

5 600 holdings with area in use

5 600 holdings had at least 5 decares agricultural area in use in 1999. Since 1989 the number of holdings have fallen by more than 2 000, or more than 27 per cent. It was the minor holdings that shut down the farming, and the number of holdings which operated less than 50 decares has been cut into half. The average holding has in the ten-year period increased 24 decares to 84 decares.

Land rental increased from 1989 to 1999. 108 000 decares were rented in 1989, representing 23 per cent of all land in use. Ten years later 149 000 decares or 41 per cent of the land were rented. All in all it was paid 7,1 million NOK for land rental, which correspond to 108 NOK per decare.

6 200 full time equivalents

All in all, labour input corresponding to 6 200 full-time equivalents was employed in the holdings in Hordaland in 1998/1999. At about half of the holdings, the total labour input corresponded to one full time equivalent or more, while 1 500 of the holdings the labour input was less than a half full time equivalent each.

Of 10 000 holders (included spouse and cohabitants), 2 500 worked at least 1 500 hours at the holding. The corresponding number in 1989 was 3 500 holders. In 1989 33 per cent of the holders worked 1 500 hours or more off the holding. Ten years later the share had increased to 36 per cent.

Much surface-cultivated land

All in all it was 470 000 decares agricultural area in use in Hordaland, and the area has slightly changed since 1989. 96 per cent of the area was meadow for mowing and pasturing, and about 40 per cent of this area was surface-cultivated area or cleared or fertilised pastureland. Almost half of the cultivated meadow was 10 years or older, while 90 per cent of the surface-cultivated was that old.
