More wild reindeer felled
A total of 5 450 wild reindeer were shot during the hunting. This is an increase of 350 animals from 2009. For the first time in eight years, most reindeer were felled on Hardangervidda.
Out of a felling quota of 10 521 animals, 5 450 were felled. This results in a felling percentage of 52. In 2009, the felling quota was slightly lower, while the felling percentage was 53.
Increased felling on Hardangervidda
The Hardangervidda plateau is Norway's largest wild reindeer area . In the last part of the 1990s, 3 000-4 000 wild reindeer were felled in this area every year. Four years ago the wild reindeer in the Hardangervidda area were preserved except for one hunting ground. The preservation took place due to reduced stock of wild reindeer. Gradually, the restrictions have been relieved. In 2010, 970 animals were felled, an increase of 369 animals from the previous year. The felling percentage was 48.
Reduced felling in Rondane
Not including Hardangervidda, most wild reindeer were shot in Ottadalsområdet wild reindeer area. In total, 639 animals were shot, an increase of 29 from 2009. In Rondane wild reindeer area, which had the highest felling the two previous years, 594 animals were felled in 2010. This is more than 200 fewer than in the previous year.
More reindeer hunters
Statistics on wild reindeer hunters in 2010 are published next year. Figures show that 8 000 hunters hunted wild reindeer in the autumn of 2009, a decrease of 100 from the year before.
