Increase in forest road construction

In total, 92 kilometres of new whole year roads and summer roads were built in 2012, and 264 kilometres were rebuilt. This is 14 and 15 kilometres more than in the previous year respectively.

Total costs for construction and reconstruction of forest roads amounted to NOK 173 million in 2012. Government subsidies accounted for NOK 56 million of the costs. The average expenditure was NOK 390 per metre of whole year roads and summer roads, and NOK 129 per metre of winter roads and tractor roads . In total, 189 kilometres of new winter roads and tractor roads were built and 78 kilometres were rebuilt in 2012.

Extensive forest road network

Although there is little construction of new forest roads, the total length of such roads in Norway is extensive. A total of 48 200 kilometres of whole year roads and summer roads were registered as per 1 January 2013. In comparison, the total length of public roads in Norway is 94 000 kilometres.

All forest roads need to be approved by the Forest Service before the road is registered as completed. Some of the roads are built over several years, and the registered number and length do not correspond exactly with the actual construction in the current year.
