Willow grouse and ptarmigan are the most important small game species in Norway. The annual harvesting of grouse has declined from over half a million in the hunting year 1999/2000 to 120 000 in the last hunting year. The reason for this huge decline can be attributed to several factors. As a result of the decreasing population of grouse, the landowners in many places have limited the number of hunters, and bag limits have been applied. In other places, hunting has been discontinued. Less hunting pressure as a result of the restrictions may also explain some of the decrease.
Most grouse harvested in Troms
Most grouse were shot in the county of Troms, where 25 000 were harvested, even though the bag size decreased by 19 per cent. A total of 17 000 grouse were harvested in Finnmark, which is 47 per cent less than the hunting year before. In previous years, Finnmark has been at the top, and in 2005/2006 more than 100 000 grouse were shot in Finnmark.
Less woodland birds shot
In 2012/2013, the bag size of black grouse and capercaillie decreased by 40 and 50 per cent respectively. A total of 5 800 capercaillie and 14 600 black grouse were shot.
Small increase for roe deer
In total, 26 600 roe deer were shot, an increase of 700 from the year before.
Other small game
A total of 13 000 mountain hares, 24 000 red foxes, 13 000 mallards and 14 000 greylag geese were shot in 2012/2013.
