Increased yield from grouse hunt

During the hunting year 2003/04 a total of 443 000 grouses were felled. This is an increase of 7 per cent from the previous hunting year. Most of the increase is caused by higher yields of willow ptarmigan grouses. In Finnmark county the yield of willow ptarmigan increased with 22 per cent from previously hunting year.

Preliminary figures show that a total of 829 300 animals were felled during the hunting year 2003/04. A number of 96 800 people took part in small game hunting. For more information, see active hunters .

The grouse is the most felled small game in Norway. On average, 500 000 grouses were felled every year in the period 1971-2003. In the hunting year 2003/04 most grouses were felled in Finnmark county. In this county, the hunters felled 90 500 grouses, an increase of 14 900 from the previous hunting year. The yield of willow ptarmigan increased with 22 per cent in Finnmark.

In 2003/04, 66 per cent of the grouses were felled in the five northernmost counties. The corresponding share was 70 per cent in 2002/03 and 72 per cent in 2001/02.

Decrease for the roe deer hunt

In the autumn 2003 a total of 28 500 roe deers were felled. This is a decrease of 2 100 animals from the previous autumn. Most roe deers were felled in Østfold county. A total of 4 000 animals were felled in this county.

Capercaillie is one of the most popular small game species. A total of 9 900 capercaillies and 28 200 black grouses were felled in the hunting year 2003/04.

Ducks and geese

The hunters felled 22 100 mallards and 10 500 greylag geese.
