One in nine cut for sale

In 2014, timber was cut for sale on 13 900 forest properties. On average, 640 cubic metres of roundwood were cut for sale per property. During the last 10-year period, 36 per cent of the forest properties sold timber.

The activity level varied considerably between the counties. Forest owners in the county of Hedmark were the most active, with more than one in five forest properties carrying out commercial roundwood removals. In the western part of Norway, 5 per cent of the forest properties had commercial removals and in the northern part of the country the figure was even lower.

In the country as a whole, a total of 46 600 forest properties have sold timber at least once in the last 10-year period.

Average property size 55 hectares

In 2014, there were 128 200 forest properties with a productive forest area of 2.5 hectares or more in Norway. The average property size was 55 hectares. The total registered productive forest area amounted to 7.03 million hectares. A total of 34 200 of the forest properties are owned by a person who also runs an agricultural holding. In 2014, average commercial roundwood removals per property were 690 cubic metres.

As from 2011, the number of forest properties and productive forest area is based on new cartographic data analyses and data on owners and properties from the cadastre in combination with data from the Farm register. In addition, the statistics are built on data from several administrative registers.
