Physical activities in the age group 55-75 years

Many elderly are physically active

In the age group 55-75, 86 per cent are physically active regularly. Almost a third are active three hours or more per week. About half of the group is satisfied with the possibilities for physical activities in their neighbourhood.

The level of activity is naturally lowest in the age group 70-75. People with low income and low education are least active. The results are from a survey with postal questionnaires carried out in the spring of 2001 by Statistics Norway.

About 45 per cent in this age group are active at least three hours a week. 14 per cent have not participated in any activities during the last year.

60 per cent are satisfied with the facilities for sport and out-door activities that exist in the neighbourhood. One out of three misses one or more facilities. Considering organized physical activities for the age group in the neighbourhood, 45 per cent are satisfied, while 34 per cent miss one or more organized activity. One out of five does not know what kind of activity that exists, or what should be expected.
