Reduced growth in tourism industries

Total tourism consumption in 2002 was calculated at NOK 78 billion. This figure is approximately NOK 0.7 billion less than the previous year. Both tourism consumption and the activity in the tourism industries have shown a decrease in growth over the last three years.

Total tourism consumption expenditure is composed of resident and non-resident household and industrial tourism-related expenditure in Norway. In 2002, resident household tourism consumption expenditure was the largest portion of tourism consumption at just below NOK 37 billion. Accordingly, total non-resident tourism consumption was nearly 23 billion, and resident industries' tourism consumption was NOK 18 billion.

Growth rates over time

The figures show a gradual weakening in the growth of total tourism consumption expenditure over the last three years. From 2001 to 2002, tourism consumption expenditure decreased by NOK 725 million, approximately one per cent measured in current prices. Only resident household tourism consumption expenditures show growth throughout this entire period, but even the growth for this group has decreased.

Non-resident consumption expenditures in association with holidays in Norway sank by respectively one and two per cent the last two years. Since 1999, non-resident consumption in Norway has increased by NOK 151 million, or 0.5 per cent. Similar figures for Norwegians abroad increased by 4.8 per cent.

Which goods and services?

Tourists consume a wide range of goods and services in which some of these goods and services are classified as characteristic tourism products. These products include goods and services typical for the tourism industry and are closely related to tourism.

The figures show that the composition of total tourism consumption expenditure has changed over the last years. During this time, the proportion of expenditures on characteristic tourism products has increased. In 1999, 71.8 per cent of the total tourism consumption expenditure was consumption of characteristic tourism products; an increase to 74 per cent occurred in 2002.

Output of characteristic tourism products comprises approximately four per cent of total Norwegian output. Total annual output by the tourism industries fluctuates within the range of 5.2 and 5.7 per cent of the output for Norway and was 5.3 per cent in 2002.

Development in tourism industries

Tourism consumption is evaluated in current prices and therefore reflects changes in both price and volume. In current prices, the output in tourism industries increased throughout the entire period, but the growth was somewhat weaker than for the total output for Norway. The figures in constant prices show a decrease in the output for the last two years.

The value added for the tourism industries show an even growth in current prices for this period. Seen in relation to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the tourism industries proportion is approximately four per cent, and slightly increasing over the last two years. On the other hand, the proportion in constant prices has decreased slightly over the same time period.

The tourism industries portion of total employment varied between 6.7 and 7 per cent and has been unchanged over the last three years.
